This study aims to assess the impact of Citizen Math lessons and professional development within a larger and more diverse set of schools.
Back to topEligibility
We are seeking 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math teachers who are scheduled to teach during the 2023–24 and 2024–25 school years at rural and urban middle schools where at least 25 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
We are studying the impacts of Citizen Math at the school level and thus are looking for full math department participation in grades 6, 7, and 8.

- Explore and learn new ways to contextualize mathematics to help students develop their ability to use math to understand and articulate different perspectives.
- Participate in and contribute to a professional network of teachers across multiple states.
- Contribute to learning for the field about enhancing civic and social-emotional learning in math classes.
Study Timeline
We are conducting a two-year study. The first set of schools started in Summer 2023, and we are currently looking for schools to join the study in January 2024. The study consists of two cohorts.
- Cohort 1 schools will have access to use Citizen Math during the study in years 2023–24 and 2024–25, and in years 2025–26 and 2026–27 after the study
- Cohort 2 schools will have access to use Citizen Math after the study in 2025–26 and 2026–27
A lottery will be conducted to select which schools participate in either cohort.
